John H. "Jack" FreemanWELLSBURG – John H. “Jack” Freeman, Age 77 of Rotary Road Chemung, NY passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, April 27, 2013. Jack was born January 23, 1936 in Elmira Heights, NY son of the late Claude and Elnora (Gardner) Freeman. He was a Veteran of the Korean War serving with the United States Marine Corps from 1953 to 1961. Jack was retired from the Chemung County Highway Department where he was employed as Equipment Supervisor for 25 years. He also worked for Lane Construction as a master mechanic and also was known for his welding skills. He was a 66 year member of the Chemung United Methodist Church, Chemung Volunteer Fire Department serving in many capacities for 56 years, Chemung Zoning Board of Appeals for 25 years and caretaker/sextant of the Chemung Cemetery for 33 years. He will be deeply missed by his loving family, friends and the community that he served so faithfully. Survivors include his loving wife of 52 years Linda J. Freeman, sons, Kenneth B. Freeman of Ohio, Joel D. Freeman of Texas, a daughter Cathy (Randy) Shelmidine of Lorraine, NY, grandchildren Lindsay and Christopher Shelmidine both of Lorraine, NY and John A. Freeman of Ohio and several nieces, nephews. Jack was predeceased by his parents, a son Christopher John Freeman, a brother, Claude Freeman, Jr. and a sister, Patricia Freeman Pirozzolo. Family and friends are invited to call from 11 to 12 PM on Saturday, May 11, 2013 at the Chemung United Methodist Church. His service will be held at 12 Noon with Reverend Mark Lemmon officiating. Interment with full military honors will follow in Chemung Cemetery. A luncheon will follow burial at the fellowship hall at church. In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made to the Chemung United Methodist Church, Box 72, Chemung, NY 14825 or to the Chemung Cemetery Association C/O Claudine Campbell, Wyncoop Creek Road, Chemung NY 14825.
